Thomas Boag, M.Sc., P. Biol.
President, Senior Fish Biologist

Tom Boag has worked with fish populations and aquatic habitats since the summer of 1982 and has consulted full time since 1990.  Tom founded Applied Aquatic Research Ltd. (AAR) in 1996 and brought it to a full service consulting firm in May 1998.   As a Senior Biologist, Mr. Boag has managed and participated in numerous projects relating to rivers, reservoirs, lakes and dugouts throughout Alberta, British Columbia and the Arctic.   He provides clients with project management, literature review, study design, data collection and analysis, and reporting expertise.  His experience includes fish population and aquatic habitat inventory and monitoring programs, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA's) for pipeline development, recreational facilities (e.g. ski hills, golf courses) and garbage dumps, fish population and riverine habitat inventories, radio-telemetry studies to investigate fish movement concerns, and expert testimony at pubic hearings.  He has been involved or managed projects requiring riverine and lake habitat assessment and diverse field work, including electrofishing (boat, float and backpack) surveys, mapping and quantification of fish habitat, collection of water quality data, fish mark-recapture studies, pipeline crossings of streams, and environmental monitoring programs.

Tom has worked extensively with oil and gas proponents including lease, pipeline and road developments in both Alberta and BC, completing over 400 QAES investigations under the Codes of Practice enacted in April 2000.   He is currently the senior fish biologist for Terasen’s TMX Pipeline through Banff National Park and Mount Robson Provincial Park in AB and BC.  In addition, he was the “Strategic Fish Habitat Biologist” for the BC Gas, Southern Crossing Pipeline Project, and oversaw and participated in the Corridor Pipeline Aquatic Resource Inventory Program.  Tom is presently in a comparable role as the Strategic Fish Habitat Biologist for the Bison and Pembina AOSPL, Ft. McMurray Pipeline projects.  He has provided expert review of the fish and aquatic resource components of CNRL Horizon’s Mine, Shell Jackpot Mine and CNRL’s No Net Loss Plan for the Horizon Mine.
