About the Role

AARES* provides environmental assessment, reclamation planning and field environmental inspection services for pipeline companies, power development projects and hydro-dam projects throughout western Canada. We have need for one or two junior/intermediate level soils/ecology trained individuals for roles as soils resource specialists on pipeline construction projects this summer supporting topsoil salvage, subsoil compaction testing, soil replacement, and reclamation monitoring in compliance with regulatory commitments. This work is initially field-based and will include shiftwork of various durations until the major construction projects are completed and will then transition into office-based work compiling reports and assisting with environmental planning projects.
AARES is an intermediate size company and successful candidates will have ample opportunity to gain experience in other environmental related disciplines, such as vegetation assessments, wildlife surveys, aquatic investigations, etc. For this position you must have a strong team-work ethic and be willing to work outdoors, sometimes under adverse weather conditions, as well as in an office setting. Safety in the work environment is always a paramount expectation and duty of all team members.
Work responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• working with contractors and client representatives on pipeline project sites to monitor and advise on soil and land conservation and reclamation during construction;
• providing input and advise in the field to mitigate soil erosion issues and facilitate reclamation activities;
• collecting field data and management of computerized databases for project documentation;
• preparing and submitting daily reports on soils and reclamation related activities;
• collecting samples when necessary and submitting, along with chain-of-custody documentation, to labs for analyses;
• conducting and maintaining job hazard assessments (JSA) on a continuous basis to facilitate safe work environments for yourself and others;
• driving to and from worksites daily over routes of all types, including primary highways, secondary gravel roads, and temporary access trails along construction rights-of-way.


We are seeking a candidate who is flexible to travel and work away from Calgary for extended periods, and is eager to participate in a range of environmental projects and gain new skills. Desired qualifications include:

· A university degree or diploma in a terrestrial, biological or agricultural related field from a recognized university or college;

· Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, with ability to drive a ¾ ton 4x4 with confidence, on and off road;

· Good physical condition with the ability to walk long distances when necessary;

· Ability and willingness to perform complex field work in a variety of weather conditions;

· Ability to complete technical reports as required for clients and various government agencies when necessary;

· Excellent communication and time management skills along with a positive attitude and strong initiative;

· Working proficiency with computers and PC based word processing and data management software, as well as GPS on tablets or mobile devices;

· Ability to work respectfully with colleagues, contractors and clients.
